As is often the case we hear about writers who have “made” it and in their story somewhere is the fact that writing just kind of happened. They were a waitress who wrote after work or an engineer who wrote on breaks. Maybe they were on the verge of getting kicked out of their apartment or lost everything they had. They didn’t start out as a writer, but it kind of just came to them, and after some time, and once their goals became clear, voila! Full time paid writer.

Many people start writing as an outpouring of a life event. Tragedy, depression, death, and crises of all sorts can drive people to pick up a pen and write. It is something that life pulls out of them. Find yourself without any answers to too many deep questions and you might find yourself starting a blog. Waking up and realizing you made it after years of suffering might find yourself jotting down profound thoughts in a journal that later gets published as a self-help book.

French essayist Michel De Montaigne’s came as a way to bring order to his thoughts and in response to his books. Montaigne is famous because of the essays that he wrote during the ten years he spent in self-imposed solitude in his tower. The solitude began to have an effect on him. He was surrounded by books and after a while they began to demand a response from him.
