The Question of a Lifetime: What Do I Do With Myself?

No one tells you up front that this is the question you should try to answer. I chalk my ignorance up to my parents. They sent me out in the world, no really they just let me wonder out the front door and hoped it worked out for me, without giving me any clue what life was about. I didn’t need a PhD in life, but a few statements to guide me in the right direction would have been nice. Nope! I think they expected me to figure it out like they had, but I don’t think they ever figured it out. They presumed I would regurgitate what I learned.

I am not sure how joyful they felt my life would be repeating their behaviors. Let’s get married and live as if we are alone. Let’s drink a lot and go home late. Let’s play passive aggressive games until we divorce and do so without ever having an open and honest conversation. This will work great for the kids. I hope they learned our lessons. We sure did. No wonder we have wondered in and out of jobs, gotten divorced, dabbled in drugs and alcohol, and played our own passive aggressive games in relationships. I’m not blaming my parents for everything, but a poor launch in to a world I was not ready for.
