The Book That We Need Before All Other Self-Help Books — The Search For the Real Self

Anyone who is aware of this book does others a great disservice by not recommending it as a must read for every human being. This should be required reading growing up, before high school graduation, and every decade we age. I could be over estimating the importance of this text, but safer to over-estimate than to under value or ignore altogether.

Painter Edward Munch thought enough of the real self to produce 50,000 drawings and paintings in tribute to it. If we ever wondered what our teen rebellion might have been about or our midlife crisis this book helps us understand those periods of our lives and the personality disorder of the age — the false self.

Most self-help and how to succeed in work and life books are striving to help people live their best life, live with purpose, and do work that has meaning. Each author has a system or belief about how to accomplish that and if the reader follows their advice they will be on their way towards achieving great success.

Dr. James F Masterson, however, provides the baseline from which they all should work from as he explains how people live with a false self and how to go about finding your real self. With a 1988 perspective Masterson writes that “if we understand the real self and how it develops, we…
