My husband took the paint brush from my hand, dipped it into the paint can, and started frantically painting up and down the bathroom wall. As he did he muttered words only I would understand. As he stroked up it was let’s get this shit going. As he stroked down we have to get things moving. I watched him for a few minutes wondering when this would end. He finally plunged the brush into the can and walked off. My sane self was tempted to leave him, but my not so right in the head self knew we were on the same page. I was in a constant state of mental breakdown, but did so quietly. He was having one right in front of me while holding a paint brush and acting like a mad man.

The process of change starts with an idea. It is a safe place for change. If never acted upon it has no hope of making an impact. Ideas need time and space to be properly identified. In my husband’s case he had a recurring idea that was driven by the dire need to change his life. He could no longer tolerate his job, our geographic location, or many aspects of our life. One day his mind came up with an idea as a solution to his misery. Lets move to the ocean and start over. He had the courage to come to me with that idea and the moment I agreed we would pursue it our process of change started.
